Japanese Samurai Armour Gallery

Fine examples of Japanese Samurai armour. Most of these pretty scary armour suits date back to the Edo period, i.e. from 1530 to 1871. The Edo period (江戸時代), or Tokugawa period (徳川時代), is a division of Japanese history which was ruled by the shoguns of the Tokugawa family, running from 1603 to 1868. It is marked by a vital commercial sector, urbanization and a sophisticated government bureaucracy. Entertaining arts and culture flourished at this time – professional female entertainers (geisha), music, popular stories, Kabuki and bunraku (puppet theater), and poetry were all very popular and supported. Historians claim that a major factor to the decline of the Tokugawa was poor management of the central government by the shogun, which caused the social classes in Japan to fall apart. The Tokugawa attempted to restrict accumulation of wealth and fostered a a policy, in which the farmer, the ultimate producer, was the ideal person in society.
